On March 15, the Youth Forum on Digital Intelligence Civilization Innovation was held at Nanjing University, Xianlin Campus. Nineteen scholars from the humanities, arts, and social sciences presented groundbreaking insights into the intersection of their fields with data intelligence technologies.
Exploring Liberal Arts in the Era of Digital Intelligence
Chen Yunsong, Vice Chair of the University CPC Council, emphasized that studies on civilization and culture empowered by data intelligence is essential for revitalizing NJU's prominence with its humanities.
Lu Andong, Secretary-General of the Digital Intelligence Innovation Laboratory of Research on Chinese Civilization, Nanjing University, stated that NJU has been leveraging the laboratory to advance research on data intelligence civilization since last year, focusing on fundamental and challenging issues in human civilization in the era of digital intelligence.
AI Applications in Textual Research for Middle and Ancient Chinese history
The forum highlighted six keywords of NJU's digital intelligence research: analysis, measurement, modeling, mining, integration, and intervention. Scholars engaged in group discussions around these focus areas.
In the data intelligence mining group, Professor Hua Tao, Chief Expert at NJU's Research Base for Forging the Sense of Community for the Chinese Nation, shared cases of AI-assisted development and utilization of middle and ancient historical texts. A data intelligence document processing platform, introduced by Jin Bowen, a young faculty member, has enabled real-time translation and cross-linguistic retrieval between Chinese and Western languages.
Meanwhile, the modeling group showcased AI's transformative potential for ancient text studies. Nie Fei, Assistant Researcher from the School of Liberal Arts, Nanjing University. demonstrated how AI is bringing new life into ancient texts. Her team has developed a digital writing system which allows students specializing in Paleography to write ancient Chinese characters online.
Advancing Interdisciplinary Research and Promoting the Transformation of Liberal Arts
Gu Cheng, Director of the International Affairs Office, Nanjing University, announced the "AI for HASS (Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences) International Fellowship". This annual initiative aims to support global experts and research teams specialising in data intelligence innovation within humanities and social sciences, to conduct collaborative digital at NJU.
The forum was co-organized by the Offices of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Chinese Civilization Data intelligence Innovation Laboratory, and the Laboratory of Data Intelligence and Interdisciplinary Innovation, Nanjing University.
